My advice: live and shoot your life and hen sink in to the city that feels like home. NY is MUCH more serious about fashion since it is a major drive for our economy, but so many people move to NY thinking ‘I’m going to be a great fashion photographer!” They get some makeup, models, stylists and hair to mimic the shots they see in magazines but they have NO long term staying power. And they might as well live in LA, Chicago or Miami. Of course you CAN do that kind of fashion photography, but i couldn’t do it and I couldn’t suggest others do it either.
I work as an auteur so I pull from my experiences and my vision of how I want things to look. So I encourage everyone to travel a little while you get your heart broken, break some hearts, break some dumb laws, break your savings, and break yourself free from whatever limitations you’ve set for yourself - then shoot around that experience! Give your audience something to feel and you can live/work wherever you want.
